Book Blast for "Someone to Listen" by A.T. Douglas

Bio:
After growing up in the Pacific Northwest, A.T. Douglas ventured away from her quiet hometown for the bustle of college in the city of Boston.  Though she studied astronomy and was a science geek at heart, she always had a love for the written word and a story swirling in her head.

It wasn't until she became addicted to the Young Adult/New Adult Contemporary Romance genres that she embraced her renewed passion for reading by self-publishing her debut novel, Someone to Listen.  Fueled by coffee and her love of music, she strives to turn daydreams and the realities of life into words the world can read.  Her writing is inspired by personal experiences and memories from her past.  She hopes to inspire others to break the silence and get their stories out into the world.

A.T. Douglas lives in New Hampshire with her husband and son and wishes desperately that there were more hours in the day for family, reading, and writing.

Book Synopsis:
Abby wanted a fresh start, a new life thousands of miles away from her four difficult years of high school and the rumors that followed her.  As she begins her college experience in Boston, she finds friendship and love she didn’t expect, people who show her that she doesn’t have to be alone.

She is torn between two paths, inexplicably drawn to two completely different guys.  One understands her and reminds her of who she used to be, the broken shadow of a person wandering through life but not truly living.  The other is the key to her future, the guiding hand that she waited for years to pull her out of the darkness and into the light.

When Abby’s newfound happiness and renewed existence are threatened, everything changes.  She can fall back to that dark place within her or fight to save her future.

She faces the same struggle she has all along: getting someone to hear her, finding someone to believe her.

All she ever needed was someone to listen.

Book Review: Unlikely Hero by Kemmie Michaels (Atlanta Series #1)

Synopsis:

Erin never would have expected to fall in love. Never. Not with her past, and not with her fear. She never dates; she doesn't even allow herself friendships. She doesn’t trust her judge-of-character skills enough to allow anyone close...until Marcus. With him, a deep connection happens in spite of the walls she's so carefully constructed around herself.
Marcus uses his self-confessed rage to fuel every part of his life. He survived the severe abuse of his childhood and learns to harness all the leftover anger into MMA fighting. His rage takes a rest, however, the moment he experiences Erin’s presence. Marcus dares to make the step that leads to love, one with the potential to heal them both.

MY REVIEW:

* I received a free Ecopy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

This book started out a bit slow for me. In the beginning I was so frustrated with Erin. I hated how she tucked herself away from the world and focused solely on her fear. Depriving herself of virtually everything and just feeding into her fear. I wanted to shake her and smack her upside the head. I mean I understand that she was terrified about what happened and she was lost in that fear, but I was really getting fed up with her. Then in swoops Marcus....and I really felt for him. He had been through so much trauma from such an early age and here he was surviving and living his life. I really enjoyed the notes they wrote back and forth to each other, but was getting a little peeved when they took MONTHS to finally meet. Anyway...the steamy parts were steamy and the banter evolved nicely between them. I like how Erin found her confidence through Marcus. BUT I hated how she kept saying she "wasn't strong enough without him." To me it made her seem like she was still "playing the victim." YES, Marcus helped her out of her darkness, BUT if she didn't want to come into the light, it wouldn't have mattered how much Marcus was there. I also liked how Marcus evolved in the book as well. I enjoyed reading about Cassie and Scott at the end of the book and hope that they will be the next book in the series. Overall I rated this book at 3 1/2 stars. I would like to read more of the series and see where the author takes it!

Book 1 in The World Aflame Series ~ NEW ADULT

(Young Adult Appropriate)

THE EARTH GIVES WAY TO THE SEA,

THE SEA BOWS BEFORE THE WIND,

THE WIND FEEDS THE FLAME,

THE FLAME BURNS THE WORLD OF MAN DOWN TO THE EARTH.

The sleepy town of White Halls harbors a dangerous secret. On a picturesque street, two houses down from a lovely little park, in a quaint little home with a wraparound porch, lives a family that seems rather normal. Sure, their twenty-year-old son, Xander, still lives at home, but he's going to college and dating the leader of the schools top sorority. It's all very... normal.  However, when a man is miraculously saved from being hit by a bus, Xander's life turns in to the living embodiment of the tornadoes he can suddenly create with a flick of his wrist. Whether he wants this gift or not, Xander must learn to use his new 'super power' quickly if he wants to survive.  For his kind is a dying race, and when this sleepy town has a sudden influx of new, blonde, fire wielders, no one is safe, especially Xander. It doesn't help that one of these blondes happens to be the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. Xander can't deny the instant connection he feels to her so, when she tries to kill him, it certainly makes things complicated.

Sunday Spotlight: Sara Mack, author of "The Guardian Trilogy" plus a giveaway!

Hello Amongsters! Today for Spotlight Sunday, I'm interviewing, Sara Mack, author of “The Guardian Trilogy.”

Sara, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your writing.

AGAB: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

SM: I’m a wife and a hockey mom, and I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life. My husband and I have a daughter, the hockey player, and a son, the video game player. I work for a local community college in Student Services, and I just got moved to a different department. My office now has a window, which is pretty exciting, although this squirrel keeps jumping up into the windowsill and scaring me! She’s cute and all, but a little warning would be nice.

I adore bacon, iced tea, and dark chocolate. I follow a Paleolithic diet, dance and sing while I drive my daughter to hockey (which embarrasses her to no end), and if I could live in Cinderella’s castle at Disney World, I totally would.

AGAB: What book(s) are you reading right now?

SM: Sadly, none. My Kindle won’t turn on anymore! I have the app on my phone, but it isn’t the same. My new Kindle should be here any day now. **smiles like an idiot**

AGAB: Now since we are on the topics of books...let's talk a little about your book, The Guardian. What inspired you to write it?

SM: It was my friend, Shannon. About a year ago, she was writing some fan fiction, and I was her beta reader. The longer we bounced ideas off one another and discussed the books we were currently reading, we decided we should try to write our own original stories.

The idea for "Guardian" actually came to me in the shower (the BEST thinking place ever!), when I was trying to come up with a storyline I considered original. Personally, I hadn’t read many ghost stories, and I enjoy reading romance. So, I decided to try and combine the two.

AGAB: How long did it take for you to write "Guardian?"

SM: I wrote all three books in The Guardian Trilogy in just over a year, so I’d say about four months.

AGAB: Are any situations or experiences in your novel based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

SM: A few. The lighter situations, like Emma’s dad making alphabetically-shaped pancakes, came from my own father. I’ve definitely been out TP’ing houses on Devil’s Night, and I used to work at a golf course. I’ve also been a little light-headed due to strawberry daiquiris – heehee.

As for death and loss, I think everyone has experienced that at some point in their lives. I’ve never lost a significant other, but I did lose a friend just after high school who had the same girlfriend for years. You just knew the two of them would be together for life. He was killed in a car accident, and I remember thinking how hard it must have been for her. Thoughts of those days played into my writing, but the characters in the story are entirely fictional.

I also firmly believe in guardian angels. I’m not a religious person, but there have been a few instances where things have happened, and I know someone was looking out for me. I just don’t know who.

AGAB: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

SM: No; it was never my intent to write a story with a moral or a message.  No two people read the same book; they may agree that they like or dislike a story, but everyone interprets things differently.  My main goal was to entertain and give readers a place to lose themselves for a while, because that’s why I enjoy reading.  I love the escape.

AGAB: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything about "Guardian?"

SM: No, I don’t think so. At first I was going to answer “yes,” because when I wrote Guardian (and the sequels), I didn’t tell anyone but my few beta readers.  My husband didn’t know, none of my family did.  Then, when I confessed after hitting publish on Amazon, it felt like this huge secret.  Everyone was shocked that I'd wrote a book, but also very supportive. I was going to say I would have told everyone from the get-go, but thinking on it, no. They would have asked me too many questions, and I would never have been able to be alone in my little Guardian world.

AGAB: "Guardian" is your debut novel and also book 1 in the trilogy. Have you already started writing book 2 and 3?

SM: Books 2 and 3 are complete.  Book 2, Allegiant, will be released on October 6th.  I’m planning to publish the third novel, Reborn, in early February 2014.

Now that we got to know Sara a little better and we learned a little about her book “Guardian.” Here is the cover:

Guardian (The Guardian Trilogy, #1)

SYNOPSIS:

True love never dies.
Emma Donohue begs to differ.

When a late night accident claims the love of her life, Emma secludes herself in memories of James. In his sandy brown hair and clear blue eyes. In their innocent first kiss and declarations of love. In their plans for a life together after college. But happy dreams can’t rid her of the guilt she carries. She can’t erase her actions the night he died. She can’t erase her reaction at his funeral. And she can’t erase the hollow void that fills her chest and consumes her heart.

The first time Emma hears James’ voice, she’s astounded. It sounds as if he’s standing right beside her, and she fears her shattered heart is trying to drive her mad. But, as she continues to hear the voice, she finds comfort in it. With the help of her best friend Shel and handsome newcomer Dane, she tries to move forward and start living again.

Until the voice in her head turns out to be more. So much more.

You know what they say.
True love never dies.

'I'm not coming over.' Shey replied confidently.

'Slide your hand beneath your panties and tell me how ready you are for me.'
Oh my god, he did.

Single Manhattanite Shey Lopez doesn't do one night stands, or have relationships she can't control. Especially if giving in to playboy Calvin Jones means losing her heart in the process.

However, Mr Won't-Take-No-For-An-Answer always gets what he wants and there's only so many times a girl can resist such an enticing proposal...

MY REVIEW:  4 stars

*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and also in conjunction with Tasty Book Tours.*

This novella was great. I really liked the chemistry between Shey and Calvin. To say it was hot, would be an understatement. I wasn't expecting much from this novella...I thought it would be like so many other erotica novellas...but it had depth to it. Shey and Calvin were so sure of what they wanted from each other...sex...for 2 weeks..and then they'd walk alway...what they didn't count on was the extremely dangerous connection they felt to each other. I was sure it would be predictable but i'm happy with how it ended...I would have liked to see how Shey and Felicity's relationship changes towards the end...other than that, I'd love to read more of the series...

About me (snooze—can you tell I hate the me stuff? Lol)

For as long as I can remember, I've had a good book in my hands. In primary school I loved Roald Dahl. In high school my English teacher introduced me to Charles Dickens, Stephen King, Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, and Shakespeare. It was then that I discovered my love for romance and I've wanted to pen my own imaginary heroes and heroines for others to enjoy ever since. Only in the last few years was I lucky enough to meet some fabulous and encouraging people to help me gain the skills to make that dream possible.

I live in sunny Scotland in a small town near the Ochils and work nine to five in a solicitors office. In my free time, you'll find me on Facebook, stalking *cough* following friends on Twitter, and may even catch me shoe shopping.
