Book Blast for "Someone to Listen" by A.T. Douglas

Bio:
After growing up in the Pacific Northwest, A.T. Douglas ventured away from her quiet hometown for the bustle of college in the city of Boston.  Though she studied astronomy and was a science geek at heart, she always had a love for the written word and a story swirling in her head.

It wasn't until she became addicted to the Young Adult/New Adult Contemporary Romance genres that she embraced her renewed passion for reading by self-publishing her debut novel, Someone to Listen.  Fueled by coffee and her love of music, she strives to turn daydreams and the realities of life into words the world can read.  Her writing is inspired by personal experiences and memories from her past.  She hopes to inspire others to break the silence and get their stories out into the world.

A.T. Douglas lives in New Hampshire with her husband and son and wishes desperately that there were more hours in the day for family, reading, and writing.

Book Synopsis:
Abby wanted a fresh start, a new life thousands of miles away from her four difficult years of high school and the rumors that followed her.  As she begins her college experience in Boston, she finds friendship and love she didn’t expect, people who show her that she doesn’t have to be alone.

She is torn between two paths, inexplicably drawn to two completely different guys.  One understands her and reminds her of who she used to be, the broken shadow of a person wandering through life but not truly living.  The other is the key to her future, the guiding hand that she waited for years to pull her out of the darkness and into the light.

When Abby’s newfound happiness and renewed existence are threatened, everything changes.  She can fall back to that dark place within her or fight to save her future.

She faces the same struggle she has all along: getting someone to hear her, finding someone to believe her.

All she ever needed was someone to listen.

Book Review: Unlikely Hero by Kemmie Michaels (Atlanta Series #1)

Synopsis:

Erin never would have expected to fall in love. Never. Not with her past, and not with her fear. She never dates; she doesn't even allow herself friendships. She doesn’t trust her judge-of-character skills enough to allow anyone close...until Marcus. With him, a deep connection happens in spite of the walls she's so carefully constructed around herself.
Marcus uses his self-confessed rage to fuel every part of his life. He survived the severe abuse of his childhood and learns to harness all the leftover anger into MMA fighting. His rage takes a rest, however, the moment he experiences Erin’s presence. Marcus dares to make the step that leads to love, one with the potential to heal them both.

MY REVIEW:

* I received a free Ecopy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

This book started out a bit slow for me. In the beginning I was so frustrated with Erin. I hated how she tucked herself away from the world and focused solely on her fear. Depriving herself of virtually everything and just feeding into her fear. I wanted to shake her and smack her upside the head. I mean I understand that she was terrified about what happened and she was lost in that fear, but I was really getting fed up with her. Then in swoops Marcus....and I really felt for him. He had been through so much trauma from such an early age and here he was surviving and living his life. I really enjoyed the notes they wrote back and forth to each other, but was getting a little peeved when they took MONTHS to finally meet. Anyway...the steamy parts were steamy and the banter evolved nicely between them. I like how Erin found her confidence through Marcus. BUT I hated how she kept saying she "wasn't strong enough without him." To me it made her seem like she was still "playing the victim." YES, Marcus helped her out of her darkness, BUT if she didn't want to come into the light, it wouldn't have mattered how much Marcus was there. I also liked how Marcus evolved in the book as well. I enjoyed reading about Cassie and Scott at the end of the book and hope that they will be the next book in the series. Overall I rated this book at 3 1/2 stars. I would like to read more of the series and see where the author takes it!

Sunday Spotlight: Sara Mack, author of "The Guardian Trilogy" plus a giveaway!

Hello Amongsters! Today for Spotlight Sunday, I'm interviewing, Sara Mack, author of “The Guardian Trilogy.”

Sara, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your writing.

AGAB: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

SM: I’m a wife and a hockey mom, and I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life. My husband and I have a daughter, the hockey player, and a son, the video game player. I work for a local community college in Student Services, and I just got moved to a different department. My office now has a window, which is pretty exciting, although this squirrel keeps jumping up into the windowsill and scaring me! She’s cute and all, but a little warning would be nice.

I adore bacon, iced tea, and dark chocolate. I follow a Paleolithic diet, dance and sing while I drive my daughter to hockey (which embarrasses her to no end), and if I could live in Cinderella’s castle at Disney World, I totally would.

AGAB: What book(s) are you reading right now?

SM: Sadly, none. My Kindle won’t turn on anymore! I have the app on my phone, but it isn’t the same. My new Kindle should be here any day now. **smiles like an idiot**

AGAB: Now since we are on the topics of books...let's talk a little about your book, The Guardian. What inspired you to write it?

SM: It was my friend, Shannon. About a year ago, she was writing some fan fiction, and I was her beta reader. The longer we bounced ideas off one another and discussed the books we were currently reading, we decided we should try to write our own original stories.

The idea for "Guardian" actually came to me in the shower (the BEST thinking place ever!), when I was trying to come up with a storyline I considered original. Personally, I hadn’t read many ghost stories, and I enjoy reading romance. So, I decided to try and combine the two.

AGAB: How long did it take for you to write "Guardian?"

SM: I wrote all three books in The Guardian Trilogy in just over a year, so I’d say about four months.

AGAB: Are any situations or experiences in your novel based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

SM: A few. The lighter situations, like Emma’s dad making alphabetically-shaped pancakes, came from my own father. I’ve definitely been out TP’ing houses on Devil’s Night, and I used to work at a golf course. I’ve also been a little light-headed due to strawberry daiquiris – heehee.

As for death and loss, I think everyone has experienced that at some point in their lives. I’ve never lost a significant other, but I did lose a friend just after high school who had the same girlfriend for years. You just knew the two of them would be together for life. He was killed in a car accident, and I remember thinking how hard it must have been for her. Thoughts of those days played into my writing, but the characters in the story are entirely fictional.

I also firmly believe in guardian angels. I’m not a religious person, but there have been a few instances where things have happened, and I know someone was looking out for me. I just don’t know who.

AGAB: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

SM: No; it was never my intent to write a story with a moral or a message.  No two people read the same book; they may agree that they like or dislike a story, but everyone interprets things differently.  My main goal was to entertain and give readers a place to lose themselves for a while, because that’s why I enjoy reading.  I love the escape.

AGAB: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything about "Guardian?"

SM: No, I don’t think so. At first I was going to answer “yes,” because when I wrote Guardian (and the sequels), I didn’t tell anyone but my few beta readers.  My husband didn’t know, none of my family did.  Then, when I confessed after hitting publish on Amazon, it felt like this huge secret.  Everyone was shocked that I'd wrote a book, but also very supportive. I was going to say I would have told everyone from the get-go, but thinking on it, no. They would have asked me too many questions, and I would never have been able to be alone in my little Guardian world.

AGAB: "Guardian" is your debut novel and also book 1 in the trilogy. Have you already started writing book 2 and 3?

SM: Books 2 and 3 are complete.  Book 2, Allegiant, will be released on October 6th.  I’m planning to publish the third novel, Reborn, in early February 2014.

Now that we got to know Sara a little better and we learned a little about her book “Guardian.” Here is the cover:

Guardian (The Guardian Trilogy, #1)

SYNOPSIS:

True love never dies.
Emma Donohue begs to differ.

When a late night accident claims the love of her life, Emma secludes herself in memories of James. In his sandy brown hair and clear blue eyes. In their innocent first kiss and declarations of love. In their plans for a life together after college. But happy dreams can’t rid her of the guilt she carries. She can’t erase her actions the night he died. She can’t erase her reaction at his funeral. And she can’t erase the hollow void that fills her chest and consumes her heart.

The first time Emma hears James’ voice, she’s astounded. It sounds as if he’s standing right beside her, and she fears her shattered heart is trying to drive her mad. But, as she continues to hear the voice, she finds comfort in it. With the help of her best friend Shel and handsome newcomer Dane, she tries to move forward and start living again.

Until the voice in her head turns out to be more. So much more.

You know what they say.
True love never dies.

MY REVIEW:  4 stars

*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and also in conjunction with Tasty Book Tours.*

This novella was great. I really liked the chemistry between Shey and Calvin. To say it was hot, would be an understatement. I wasn't expecting much from this novella...I thought it would be like so many other erotica novellas...but it had depth to it. Shey and Calvin were so sure of what they wanted from each other...sex...for 2 weeks..and then they'd walk alway...what they didn't count on was the extremely dangerous connection they felt to each other. I was sure it would be predictable but i'm happy with how it ended...I would have liked to see how Shey and Felicity's relationship changes towards the end...other than that, I'd love to read more of the series...

About me (snooze—can you tell I hate the me stuff? Lol)

For as long as I can remember, I've had a good book in my hands. In primary school I loved Roald Dahl. In high school my English teacher introduced me to Charles Dickens, Stephen King, Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, and Shakespeare. It was then that I discovered my love for romance and I've wanted to pen my own imaginary heroes and heroines for others to enjoy ever since. Only in the last few years was I lucky enough to meet some fabulous and encouraging people to help me gain the skills to make that dream possible.

Busy, Busy Blogger.....

Hello Amongsters! What have you all been up to? I've been doing a lot of "Facebooking" lately....I have a FB page for this blog (if you didn't know.....the link is www.facebook.com/agirlamongstbooks) and it's really taken off! I'm almost to 500 likes! It's a very exciting time but also a super busy time. I've taken on quite a few read and reviews. In my haste to read these awesome books offered to me...I may have bitten off more than I can chew..lol.  Now I have this huge list and find myself not wanting to read as much. NOT because I don't enjoy it; but because now I kind of "have" to read. Make any sense? I'm reading several books right now...which all are pretty good, but it's taking me longer than normal to finish them. Then add in the whole Mommy/Wife stuff I have to attend to..and there is no time to wind down. I VOWED to myself once I get caught up with this list....I will only take on 3-4 reviews at a time. Other than that...not much else is going on....i'm hoping to have a few reviews to post soon! Talk to you all soon! Keep on reading!

Review: "The Red Sun Rises" by Victoria Kinnaird

Synopsis:

Eren Anderson is a freak among freaks. At 17 years old, he doesn’t fit in with his peers in the tiny town of All Hallows and despite being born into it, he most certainly doesn’t fit in among The Order of Our Mother, the secret nature worshipping society that has harnessed the ability cast spells and believes vampires are not only real, but their deadliest enemies. Eren is turned into a vampire after an attack by the local coven master, but that is the least of his worries...

In a post-Twilight world, “The Red Sun Rises” is a YA novel intended to give vampires their bite back but it should not be read as simply another vampire novel. “The Red Sun Rises” is a story about growing up, responsibility, falling in love, facing your fears and taking fate into your own hands.

My Review:

5 Star rating!!

* I initially purchased this book on my own, but was also given a copy for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. These are my opinions and are in NO WAY related to the fact the I was given a free copy.*

Victoria Kinnaird had me hooked from page one. She couldn't have wrote a better debut novel. Her characters are ones that you can relate to. They have everyday problems, just like everyone else (they just happen to be vampires and casters). Eren Anderson, a self-proclaimed "freak among freaks" quickly won a special place in my heart, even though he was stubborn and somewhat short-tempered throughout the book. He's a teenage boy, trying to carve out a place in the world for himself. He's experiencing things that REAL teenagers are going through. It truly was refreshing to read a YA novel told from a teenage boy's perspective and I loved that it had an underlying theme of sexuality to it. Some people may be put off by this element...but I think it made the book that much more relatable. I applaud Kinnaird for writing a story like this one! It's about time! It's not "just another teenage vampire book." No sparkly, brooding vamps here folks. The story flows nicely, it's somewhat fast paced, the characters have depth and the plot has a few twists I didn't expect. This is the kind of book teens SHOULD be reading! I could go on and on about the book about what I loved...but I'll just let you decide for yourself.  I'll be recommending it! If you haven't already bought this book...go get your copy! RIGHT NOW!

Teaser from "King Cave" by Scarlett Dawn (this is the sequel to her best-selling novel "King Hall")

King Cave by Scarlett Dawn.
Copyright 2013

Here's a long snippet for y'all. Enjoy...

A clapping sounded loudly, and I heard King Venclaire say, “Wake up, prodigies.”

I growled, my wolf sounding, snuggling further into the warmth.

“Fuck off.” Ezra voice vibrated against my ear, his arms tightening around me, his cheek rubbing against the top of my head.

“Five more minutes,” Pearl slurred.

“Hell…chickens,” Jack groused.

It was the snickering that really woke me.

And the sound of…Elder Jacobs...muttering, “Chickens?”

“Kill ‘em…bastards,” Jack snorted.

Jack mumbling unintelligibly in his sleep was nothing new, but Elder Jacobs, and who had it been earlier...King Venclaire? Well, that wasn’t normal. Nor were the many chuckles sounding.

My head, and Ezra’s, popped up at the same time, and I blinked blurrily. “Huh?” I pulled my hand out from under the blanket, rubbing my eyes to see better in the bright light. “Who’s there?”

Ezra’s predator growled loud in my ear, sounding ferocious, when he apparently had the same problem as me with his sight, taking a hand off my hip to rub his eyes. “Answer her!”

Someone whistled long and high, followed by, “Someone’s testy when they wake up.” That would be King Nelson’s voice off to my right.

“You have no idea,” Cahal’s voice muttered, sounding exasperated, directly in front of me. “I don’t know how many bedroom doors, alarms clocks, and light switches we went through during his teenage years.”

I shook my head, still hearing Jack and Pearl snoring, and squinted through the light. I went completely still. I had no clue how Ezra and I ended up on the ground, but there it was. We were lying in front of the couch, half concealed by the blanket, which was wrapped under us, protecting us from the hard, cold floor. And all the Kings and Antonio’s posse were standing in front of our couch, spread out like a bad fucking dream. “Nightmare. It’s got to be.”

“Jack had it right the first time,” Ezra grumbled, practically lying on top of me. “It’s Hell.”

“With brooms,” I muttered, brushing hair out of my face, staring at what King Kincaid held, firmly ignoring some of the looks we were receiving waking like this.

“And dustpans,” he mumbled, eyes on what Elder Jacobs held, even as I felt him carefully removing his other hand from under my shirt, where he had been gripping my breast. Not exactly appropriate for our current audience. Again, thankfully, the blanket partially covered us.

I nodded toward King Fergus hand. Stalling. Giving Ezra just a bit more time. “Pearl can Windex.”

“Revenge?”

“I stank of it for weeks afterward. It was like it soaked into my pores.”

“Are you two done yet?” King Nelson griped.

Ezra actually chuckled, his hand slowly creeping down my stomach. “Just about.”

I snorted hard, my voice choked as I glanced at Cahal’s hand. “Jack gets the dirt devil.”

King Venclaire appeared pretty damn amused. “For the Hell reference?”

“Exactly,” Ezra murmured, fingers gently pulling my shirt down. “Well, that about does it.”

My head lolled back against Ezra’s chest, beginning to laugh my ass off.

“Ignore her.” Ezra patted the back of my head. “I think she smoked something herbal.”

King Venclaire snorted, but coughed over it, then took the broom King Kincaid held next to him. I blinked as he whacked Jack and Pearl, whose snores turned to shouts up on top of the couch. The broom was suddenly back in King Kincaid’s hand, and King Venclaire pointed at him, saying, “I believe he did it.”

“What?” Jack muttered loudly. A pause. “Hey! Where the hell are Ezra and Lily?”

“Down here!” I called, my chin quivering as I waggled my fingers. “Somehow.”

“That happened during the…” Elder Merrick paused, looking at King Kincaid. “What? During the second movie?”

King Kincaid’s head tilted. “Well, it all started during the first when Pearl fell asleep.”

King Venclaire nodded. “Ezra and Lily were already out, and then Pearl fell asleep.”

“What did I do?” Pearl asked slowly.

King Venclaire blinked. “You fell over on them.”

Cahal pointed the dirt devil at me. “Ms. Ruckler started growling in her sleep, muttering something every once in a while about ‘too hot’.”

Elder Jacobs nodded. “Then Jack fell asleep.” He made a down motion. “And he fell over, too.”

King Nelson pulled at his ear. “Then Lily really started hollering.”

King Fergus shook his head, an absolute look of disbelief on his face. “How you three slept through her racket is seriously a miracle.”

“Ezra started growling the louder she got,” King Venclaire chuckled. “We didn’t see anything, but suddenly, we heard a thump.”

Elder Merrick’s eyebrows rose at the Kings and Elders, prompting, “During the middle of the second movie.”

They all nodded.

“I jumped up to check on you guys,” Antonio stated. “And apparently, Ezra had used his Vampire speed, knocking Lily to the floor, leaving Jack and Pearl to have the couch to themselves.”

King Nelson sighed. “And it was blissfully silent after that.”

They stared, eyes darting back and forth between all of us.

Jack muttered, “They’re putting us on.”

“Maybe drugged us, too,” Pearl griped.

“Lily?” Ezra asked, rubbing the back of his neck.

I chuckled, extremely embarrassed. “Truth. All of it.”

My Review:   1 1/2- 2 star rating

*I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

The overall idea for this book was a good one. I was excited to start reading, but once I did all I was left with was a feeling of confusion. I feel the author tried to put way too many elements into the story. The plot went in too many directions, too many times and those twists never really got resolved. I felt the pace of the story was slow and I also felt like I was wandering willy nilly through the story with no real purpose. There were more than a few times where the storyline changed completely and none of those changes really held my interest. I was quite often left wondering where the story was going but finding I didn't really care. I found myself not really liking Arielle. She seemed silly, a little shallow and quite a few times I found myself literally rolling my eyes at her. I felt the interactions between Arielle and her 2 best friends were very "school girlish," and her relationship with Sebastian quite juvenile. I didn't really feel a connection between them. Everything in the story seemed to be too perfect, everyone too agreeable and too understanding. The ending left much to be desired for me and overall the story just didn't work for me.

Review for "Deadly Crush (Deadly Trilogy #1)" by Ashley Stoyanoff

Deadly Crush (Deadly Trilogy, #1)

Synopsis:

Dog Mountain is just like any other small town — peaceful and uneventful. Well, that is if peaceful means wolves howling all night, and uneventful means it’s overrun by pesky werewolves, then yes, Dog Mountain is just your average small town.

Jade Shaw has spent the last two years avoiding the pack. But when Aidan Collins moves to town, avoiding the dogs doesn’t seem possible. The pack wants him just as much as she does.

Determined to keep him out of the pack’s grasp, Jade does everything she can to gain his attention. Little does she know, Aidan is in deeper with the pack than she could have imagined, and competing for his attention is a deadly game, one she may not want to win.

My Review:

5 star rating

*I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This review is also done in conjunction with International YA Girls Book Club.*

Ms. Stoyanoff has done it AGAIN! She has made my emotions go all haywire while reading another of her fantastic books. As soon as I read the first page I was hooked (like always). Jade (the main character) is a strong, bull headed and confident character. In the beginning of the book I wasn't sure if I was going to "click" with her personality, but by the end of the book, I was completely on her side. Her relationship, banter and power "struggle" with Aiden had me flipping through the pages so quickly. Aiden's "alpha" cockiness started putting me off a little towards the middle of the book, but by the end I came around and forgave him. Stoyanoff's characters are strong, well rounded and you either love them or you love to hate them! They all fit perfectly into the storyline. The relationships don't feel rushed or forced. I really enjoyed the 2 different point of views throughout the story and liked how the author clearly defined who was talking. The storyline was easy to follow and the twists/turns in the plot kept me entertained as well as surprised. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger but not a frustrating one. It was one that makes you feel sated but still wanting more at the same time. I will definitely be reading the next book as soon as I can get me hands on it! If you like YA and haven't read this book (or ANY of Ashley Stoyanoff's books) you NEED to! You can't go wrong!

Review for "Fire Country (The country saga)" by David Estes

Fire Country (The Country Saga, #1)

Synopsis:

In a changed world where the sky bleeds red, winter is hotter than hell and full of sandstorms, and summer's even hotter with raging fires that roam the desert-like country, the Heaters manage to survive, barely.

Due to toxic air, life expectancies are so low the only way the tribe can survive is by forcing women to procreate when they turn sixteen and every three years thereafter. It is their duty as Bearers.

Fifteen-year-old Siena is a Youngling, soon to be a Bearer, when she starts hearing rumors of another tribe of all women, called the Wild Ones. They are known to kidnap Youngling girls before the Call, the ceremony in which Bearers are given a husband with whom to bear children with.

As the desert sands run out on her life's hourglass, Siena must uncover the truth about the Wild Ones while untangling the web of lies and deceit her father has masterfully spun.

My Review:

4 star rating
*I received a copy of this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

Dystopian is quickly becoming a favorite genre of mine and David Estes has made his way onto my favorite author's list. Estes weaves an interesting story with strong, likable characters, a great easy to follow storyline and an amazing plot with some exciting twists. I really enjoyed how Sienna, the main character, grew from a somewhat weak, follower to a brave individual. She had me routing for her the whole time, while experiencing so many different emotions. I also like how the author created separate countries within one big country and how each country had distinct characteristics and dialect. The only issue I had with the story was the Fire Country "slang." It took me awhile to figure out what some words meant. I felt that it would have been useful to have a reference guide in the beginning. It didn't ruin the story for me, it just made me a little confused at first. I can't wait to read the rest of the "Country Saga" to see what happens. If you like Dystopian books you should give "Fire Country" a try.

The Earth Dwellers will cap off an eighteen month journey that has taken me from unknown Indie author to still-mostly-unknown fulltime Indie author. The change is a subtle one for most people, but for me it’s a dream come true. To the hundreds (and now maybe even thousands!) of readers who have come along for the ride with me, either by reading the Dwellers Saga, the Country Saga, or both, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Now down to business. There may be some of you who have only read the three books in the Country Saga or only the three books in the Dwellers Saga, and are now thinking you’ll read The Earth Dwellers, which is supposedly the 4th book in BOTH the Country Saga and the Dwellers Saga. Well, that’s awesome! However, I must highly recommend that before reading The Earth Dwellers that you read the three books in BOTH series. Trust me, doing so will greatly enhance your experience, as The Earth Dwellers will be taking significant characters from both series and crashing them together (yes, like a water country wave) into an action-packed tale of struggle and loss and hope and friendship… And maybe a little love, too.

David Estes was born in El Paso, Texas but moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he was very young. He grew up in Pittsburgh and then went to Penn State for college. Eventually he moved to Sydney, Australia where he met his wife and soul mate, Adele, who he’s now been happily married to for more than two years.

A reader all his life, David began writing novels for the children's and YA markets in 2010, and has completed 13 novels, 11 of which have been published.  In June of 2012, David became a fulltime writer and is now travelling the world with his wife while he writes books, and she writes and takes photographs.

David gleans inspiration from all sorts of crazy places, like watching random people do entertaining things, dreams (which he jots copious notes about immediately after waking up), and even from thin air sometimes! Recently he’s been inspired by some of his favorite authors, like Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, and Maggie Stiefvater.

David’s a writer with OCD, a love of dancing and singing (but only when no one is looking or listening), a mad-skilled ping-pong player, an obsessive Goodreads group member, and prefers writing at the swimming pool to writing at a table.  He loves responding to e-mails, Facebook messages, Tweets, blog comments, and Goodreads comments from his readers, all of whom he considers to be his friends.
